How family members can help - while also taking care of themselves

You matter too
Supporting someone with depression can be exhausting. It can feel like you always have to be strong, while at the same time you carry worry, fear, or even guilt.
Remember: your well-being is important too. Taking care of yourself is not selfish – it gives you the strength to truly support your loved one.
1. Learn and understand
Inform yourself about depression (symptoms, treatment, myths).
Knowing that depression is an illness – not a weakness – helps you respond with patience and compassion.
Accept that you cannot “fix” it alone. Your role is to support, not to cure.

2. Offer support, but set boundaries
Be present: Listen without judgment.
Encourage professional help – but don’t push too hard if the person isn’t ready.
Respect your own limits. It’s okay to say: “I need a break”.
3. Take care of yourself
Talk to someone you trust about your feelings.
Seek support groups for relatives of people with depression (many exist online and locally in Switzerland).
Consider therapy for yourself – your struggles and emotions matter too.
Maintain your own hobbies, routines, and social contacts.
4. In case of crisis
If your loved one talks about suicide or has strong suicidal thoughts, do not stay alone with this burden.
Call 143 “The Helping Hand”
Or the psychiatric emergency service in your canton
Or go directly to a hospital emergency department
5. Remember
💙 You didn’t cause the depression.
💙 You can’t carry it alone.
💙 Seeking support for yourself is a sign of strength, not weakness.
